GSTS’ OCIANA™ platform integrates AI and ML for maritime intelligence, providing Navy, Coast Guard, and commercial fleets with predictive analytics.
As a Senior Product Designer, I led digital transformation efforts that significantly improved operational efficiency and user satisfaction.

Problem
The maritime industry faced challenges with operational inefficiency, regulatory compliance, and multi-stakeholder collaboration due to the lack of real-time, reliable analytics. OCIANA™ needed to simplify the user experience while meeting decarbonization goals and enhancing data insights.
Solution
Led a cross-functional team in developing user-centered solutions, prioritizing key features that reduced job completion times by 50% and increased data accuracy by 30%. This involved service blueprinting, design system implementation, and incorporating feedback through iterative design sprints and user testing.
- Co-created wireframes, prototypes, and flow diagrams through workshops with stakeholders, leading to faster design iterations.
- Introduced collaborative tools like file directories and search functionalities that greatly enhanced navigation and task completion.

Results
Task completion times:
- Reduced by 25% to 50%.
User errors:
- Reduced to 0%.
Customer satisfaction:
- Reached 100%.
Predictive data accuracy:
- Improved by 30%.
Iteration speed:
- Increased by 50% through the use of high-fidelity prototypes and data-driven testing.
Team
Collaborated with the CTO, Product Director, Operations Director, and marketing and development teams. This partnership strengthened customer experience understanding and aligned marketing and software efforts across the organization.
Additional coordination with the GSTS Consortium included stakeholders like the Canadian Border Service Agency and the Royal Canadian Navy.

My Role
As Senior Product Designer, I led design thinking workshops, developed service blueprints, and prioritized user stories for AI-driven software. I facilitated communication between teams to ensure design coherence and brand consistency across multiple projects, including legacy systems, new applications, and marketing efforts.

Process
User Research:
Conducted in-depth interviews and contextual observations in environments such as ships and control rooms.

Workshops:
Facilitated co-creation sessions to align stakeholders, using tools like Miro, Adobe XD, and Microsoft Teams.

Prototyping & Testing:
Delivered fast prototypes, validated designs in a UAT environment, and benchmarked usability through metrics like task completion speed and satisfaction ratings.

Agile Implementation:
Managed 2-week sprints and collaborated with engineers and developers using Gitlab, ensuring that user stories were implemented efficiently.

Continuous Improvement:
Adjusted designs based on feedback from usability studies, improving key user interactions like file management and filter settings.

Conclusion
The collaborative, user-centered approach resulted in significant improvements across OCIANA™, aligning product features with business and user needs.
The success of this project solidified GSTS’s competitive edge in the maritime industry, with 100% client approval for new and updated features, faster task completion, and enhanced confidence in data accuracy.
